The Nikkan Kogyo newspaper on October 20 reported that chip supplier Micron Technology Inc (USA) plans to invest 800 billion yen ($6.99 billion) to build a new factory in Hiroshima, western Japan.

This Micron factory will specialize in the production of DRAM memory chips widely used in data centers and start operations in 2024.

The plant construction was launched as strong demand from automakers and technology companies has caused severe chip shortages globally.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said he would work with the Japanese government in strengthening Japan's semiconductor supply chain by expanding investments in the country and partnering with companies. local equipment and materials company.

In addition, Micron is also eyeing Japanese multinational computer memory maker Kioxia, the second-largest player in the world's NAND flash memory market.

According to market research firm TrendForce, Samsung is the world No. 1 in the NAND flash market with 33.5% market share, while Micron ranks 5th with 11.1% market share.

However, if Micron acquires an 18.7% stake from Kioxia, it will potentially threaten Samsung's market share.

Last week, Taiwanese (China) chip giant  TSMC announced plans to build a factory in Japan, and media reports said the Japanese government is ready to provide financial support for the plan. their investment plans.
